2009 College Football Playoff

.... And then there were two. We are down to the final two teams in our college football playoff, and it is a great game with the #3 and #4 seeds, Cincinnati and TCU, respectively.

Mr. Green: Cincinnati
Roget: TCU
Dr. G: TCU
Jack Flack: TCU
Willard: TCU
Hollywood: TCU
C-Money: Cincinnati

WINNER: TCU (5-2)

TCU takes the national Championship in a very close game. Congratulations to the TCU Horned Frogs, the 2009 Kotite's Corner National Champions.

So what does this all mean? Did the BCS get it right this year? Once again, the answer is a resounding 'No.' In fact, the question "Did the BCS get it right?" is a stupid question to be begin with, because the BCS cannot get it right, the BCS is not right to begin with. The BCS means a computer chooses two teams to play for the National Championship. Whether the two teams selected are the best two teams in the nation is meaningless. There are plenty of teams this year who haven't lost a single game, including TCU and Cincinnati, who will not get to play for the National Cahmpionship. There are arguments for and against all of the top teams, which is why we need a playoff system in college football. Division I-AA, and all Divisions below that have a playoff system.

College basketball will always be better than college football, because of college basketball's playoff system, March Madness. Did anybody ask whether UNC and Michigan State deserved to play for the National Championship last season? Did anybody ask whether March Madness got it right? No, because March Madness is a great playoff system, which always features classic, memorable games, upsets, buzzer beaters, and memories. A playoff system in football would probably create the same result.

To close our 2009 college football playoff, here is the final bracket, and how the tournament played out.

6 Eagles Make Pro Bowl

Six Philadelphia Eagles players were selected to the Pro Bowl, which may be the most since 2004-2005. The players selected were Leonard Weaver, DeSean Jackson, Jason Peters, Trent Cole, Asante Samuel, and David Akers. Most are also starters.

Since only 1 fullback is chosen, Leonard Weaver is the starter there. DeSean Jackson also is a starter, and will start opposite Larry Fitzgerald. Jason Peters will be the starting tackle, along with Bryant McKinnie. That is 3 starters on the offensive side of the football.

On defense, Asante Samuel will be starting at the one corner, opposite Charles Woodson. Trent Cole will back up Julius Peppers and Jared Allen at the defensive end spot. David Akers is the lone kicker.
Hopefully the Eagles actually send 0 players to the Pro Bowl. The Pro Bowl this season is the weekend before the Super Bowl, so both Super Bowl teams obviously will not be sending anyone to the Pro Bowl, so the alternates are important. Donovan McNabb is a 1st alternate at QB.

Also, 3 Pitt Panthers made the pro bowl - Larry Fitzgerald, and Darrelle Revis, who were basically locks before the season, and punter Andy Lee of the San Francisco 49ers.

Eagles Clinch First Round Bye With Win

The Eagles will clinch the #2 seed in the NFC and a first round bye if they beat the Cowboys on Sunday. You had to know that this Eagles-Cowboys matchup the final weekend of the season would be meaningful, and it is for both teams.

Because the Vikings lost last night, the Eagles and Vikings now have identical records. The Eagles hold the tiebreaker over the Vikings with the better conference record, and thus control their own destiny for that #2 seed. However, the Eagles can drop completely out of that spot, and drop to as low as the #6 seed if they lose to the Cowboys possibly. The Eagles have a lot to gain from a win this weekend, and unfortunately, they have a lot to lose. In fact, the Cowboys who sit at #6 in the NFC right now, could still end up with the #2 seed and a first round bye. If the Eagles, Vikings, and Cardinals lose, and Cowboys win, they take the #2 seed, and the Eagles will fall to the 5th or 6th seed.

If the Eagles lose to the Cowboys, and the Vikings and Cardinals both win, the Eagles would be the #5 seed, and would travel right back to Dallas for a first round playoff matchup. If the Eagles lose to the Cowboys, and the Vikings win, and the Cardinals lose, the Packers also jump the Eagles, and the Eagles drop to the #6 seed. In this scenario, the Eagles would also travel back to Dallas to play the Cowboys. There are also scenarios where the Eagles could lose, drop to the #5 or #6 seed and play the Vikings, if the Vikings lose their game, and Cardinals win.

So, a win would be huge for multiple reasons as you can see. You do not want to have to play in Dallas twice in a row, and in my opinion, you never want to play a divisional opponent for the 3rd time of the season in the playoffs. Should be a very interesting weekend.

2009 College Football Playoff

The final two teams are set, and we just saw the first two major upsets of the tournament with the top two seeds both going down in the semi-final matchups. The remaining two teams square off in the Rose Bowl. The matchup is as follows--

#3 Cincinnati vs. #4 TCU - Rose Bowl, Pasadena, CA.

It will be interesting to see how this game plays out. The explosive spread offense of Cincinnati led by Tony Pike and Mardy Gilyard against TCU, who has maybe the best defense in the nation.

Here is the updated bracket--

2009 College Football Playoff

The final four teams are set and we are ready to go with the games. Two good matchups square off with #1 Alabama facing off against #4 TCU, and #2 Texas playing #3 Cincinnati. The winners advance to play in the National Championship game in the Rose Bowl.

Mr. Green: TCU
Roget: TCU
Dr. G: TCU
Jack Flack: TCU
Willard: TCU
Hollywood: TCU
C-Money: Alabama

WINNER: TCU (6-1)

Mr. Green: Cincinnati
Roget: Texas
Dr. G: Cincinnati
Jack Flack: Cincinnati
Willard: Texas
Hollywood: Cincinnati
C-Money: Cincinnati

WINNER: CINCINNATI (5-2)

Upset alert - Both top seeds go down. This is huge. Neither game was close either. TCU wins in a landslide over Alabama, and Cincinnati wins in a landslide over Texas. This is why they play the games. Well, in real life, they actually don't, but if they did, something like this could happen. We will never know, and unfortantely for TCU and Cincinnati, they will not get a chance to play for the National Championship in real life. However, they will get to play for the 2009 Kotite's Corner National Championship.
